Introduction

Since start-up of the Sasol Secunda Operations, a net accumulation of water was experienced in the ash water system (transport of ash from factories to the fine ash dams) and from mining operations (seepage of water through broken strata).

In line with Sasol Secunda's Water Policy where Sasol acknowledges its responsibility to conserve and protect all the water resources within the sphere of influence of its activities, membrane processes were installed to address water balance problems. Tubular reverse osmosis (TRO) followed by spiral reverse osmosis (SRO) was used to recover ash water and convert it to boiler feed water. Electrodialysis reversal (EDR) followed by SRO were installed to convert mine drainage water to boiler feed water.

These actions resulted in solving wastewater balance problems and simultaneously reduced raw water intake.
