In principle, no problems have to be feared in combination with the use of 100 nm cartridge filters. However, a periodic Clean In Place (CIP) acid cleaning of the stacks appeared to be necessary in EDR-IMS 2 to maintain the desalination capacity. A stable operation could be maintained by applying this CIP monthly, as shown in figure 9.

4.4 Energy and chemicals consumption

Besides the desalination characteristics, an important difference between a 2 stage and 3 stage EDR system is the energy and chemicals consumption.

A 3 stage EDR system requires more energy and a higher acid dose for scaling control. On the other hand, in scheme EDR-IMS 2 a 3 stage EDR system does not need an acid dose for bromate control. The overall energy consumption (desalination energy and pumping energy) and the acid consumption of the 2 stage and 3 stage EDR system in EDR-IMS 2 are summarised in table 4.
