Atlantic. Figure 2.4 shows the time series of total named storms and the average SST in the main development region of the North Atlantic. Comparison of the two time series shows coherent variations of the number of storms and the SST for periods greater than 20 years. In particular, the period 1910-1920 with low storm activity is associated with anomalously cool SSTs.
