Dr Bowman obtained his B.S. and M.S. degrees in physics and mathematics at the University of Auckland, New Zealand, and his Ph.D. in engineering physics at the University of Saskatchewan, Canada. He is currently Professor of Physical Oceanography and Distinguished Service Professor at the Marine Sciences Research Center, Stony Brook University. He is principal investigator of the Stony Brook Storm Surge Research Group, which develops and tests coupled meteorological-ocean models to predict coastal flooding from extreme weather events, focusing particularly on the threat to the New York area from global climate change and rising sea level. Between 1996 and 1999, Dr Bowman returned to his native New Zealand to act as founding head of the School of Environmental and Marine Sciences at Auckland University. He is a Director of the Environmental Defence Society (NZ), an honorary Professor of Physics at Auckland University, the Founder and current President of the Stony Brook Environmental Conservancy, and a Distinguished Member of the National Society of Collegiate Scholars.
