Pervaporation results

Pervaporation experiments were carried out for the mixtures of MTBE/water with the concentration 4-8 MTBE vol% at room temperature. Figures 37.4 and 37.5 present pervaporation performance of the membranes (flux and separation factor).

According to the pervaporation results, membrane was permselective for MTBE over the entire range of the feed concentrations. It is found that flux increases with increasing MTBE concentrations in the feed mixture, while selectivity decreases. This can be explained by the sorption behavior of the membranes, which means the higher the swelling, the higher the flux.

MTBE and polyether segment of PEBA consist of similar ether group. According to solution-diffusion model similar groups interact with similar ones and so the permselective transport occurs. Since PEBA 2533 has the highest polyether segment between the other PEBA membranes such as PEBA 3533 and PEBA 4033, it shows both the high flux values and the high selectivity values than the others (Hilmioglu et al., 2005). It has a strong influence on the separation characteristics such as flux and selectivity.

Pervaporation results show that PEBA 2533 membranes prepared can be used for separation of MTBE/water mixture at room temperature. Separation factors obtained are high enough for pervaporation applications.
