Process optimization is placed to provide an economic, energy, and environmental evaluation of the steam network. The role of process optimization is to strike a proper balance between the holistic approach used in process synthesis and the deterministic approach used for process analysis. The goal of optimization is to identify the best performance of the system which satisfies the overall performance criterion while meeting all the design objectives (Mohan, 2005). This study deals with the optimization of steam-supply systems under variable energy demand. After steam network simulation in STAR software, the steam network must be optimized. This optimization programs can broadly be classified as follows:
1. Linear Programs (LP) at fixed header conditions
2. Nonlinear Programs (NLP) when header condition is allowed to vary
To drastically reduce the complexity of the optimization method developed requires thorough understanding of the unique combinatorial properties of the system in terms of process structures.
