30.2.2 Solar radiation

Korea introduced silver-disk pyrheliometer into Incheon Observatory with the beginning of Second International Polar Year (IPY) in 1932 to observe atmospheric turbidity, transmissivity, and direct solar radiation. Korean solar radiation observatory network was expanded to 11 direct solar radiation observatories and 3 horizontal solar radiation observatories.

This was interrupted by the Korean War in 1950 and then resumed on January 1, 1957, with the financial support from ICA, into nationwide solar radiation observatory network. Concerning global solar radiation observation, the Meteorological Equipment Modernization Plan has achieved synoptic meteorological observation system completely established in 1999 with horizontal pyrheliometers in a total of 22 stations: central office, 5 regional offices, and 10 weather stations which were designated as climate observatory (Climatic Policy Department, 2004). Like this, solar radiation observation is conducted only in fewer regions compared to the amount clouds of observed.
