We have briefly reviewed the use of game theory and potential game theoretical problems in the analysis of negotiation occurring at the UNFCCC and KP, with an emphasis on the role played by the CDM. At this moment, the future of the international scheme after 2012 is not clear, and the course of negotiation itself is a challenge to game theory. However, as many incentive issues are involved in both the negotiation process and current or proposed mechanisms, the use of game theory can contribute to the better functioning of the international effort to cope with the current global environmental problems.
