where ADd is the accumulated degree-days, i is the day of year, Tmax is the daily maximum temperature, Tmin is the daily minimum temperature, and Tb is the base temperature.

The base temperature is a function of the plant species and varies between 0 and 10°C (Vander Weide, 1992; Satorre, 1996). The Tb used in this method was 5°C. Temperature data were used from the weather station of Setif, 2 km east of the field experiment. During the 5 years of observations the first rains were noted at the end of November. December 1 was taken as initial date to count number of days and the number of degree-days. The obtained data were subjected to an analysis of variance.
