Rice is the major food crop in the Walawe Basin, from which a considerable amount is exported to Colombo, the commercial capital of Sri Lanka. Normally two crops can be grown during the year, one in the Maha (November to March) and one in the Yala (May to September) season. Rice is grown in the low lands with an area of about 30,000 ha. Rice is such a dominant crop in the basin that all other crops are normally referred to as OFC, other field crops. These are grown on small plots, the so-called gardens. As a second crop to represent these OFC in this study, vegetables were selected.
