Trends in cotton yields for the future are positive. Yields will be higher and variation in yields will not change substantially. Reducing soil evaporation (adaptation strategy 1), for example by mulching the topsoil, will increase crop yields somewhat and also an increase in irrigation (adaptation strategy 2) will help to obtain higher yields. However, since we consider only field-scale issues here and since total water consumption will be higher in the future, the impact on basin-scale total production should be analysed as well. The option of trying to reduce soil evaporation is therefore very relevant in this respect. Comparing the A2 to the B2 scenario shows the same trends, but is less profound for B2.

Conclusions drawn for cotton are also valid for wheat. Higher yields in the future, more water consumed and reducing soil evaporation or increasing irrigation have a positive impact on yields.
