Rice production in the Sacramento Basin is of major interest from an agricultural as well as environmental point of view. Rice is associated with heavy use of the scarce water resources in the basin, but also generates substantial economic benefits. From the environmental point of view, these paddy fields are valuable wetlands, but at the same time are associated with water quality degradation. The second crop considered in the Sacramento Basin is tomato. The area of tomatoes is steadily increasing and the product is used for fresh market as well as processed tomatoes. A major constraint in tomato production, besides land and water resources, is sufficient labour. Tomato prices can fluctuate substantially and, like other commodities, depend highly on the total production (Hartz, 2003).
