Geothermal energy originates from heat generated deep within the earth. While naturally occurring water from aquifers with a temperature of 50150 °C can be used for district heating, temperatures of over 150 °C are required for electricity generation. The primary disadvantage of geothermal energy is that the geological conditions that determine the quality of the resource - such as formation fluid temperature and flow rate - are difficult to predict in advance without significant capital investment in drilling and tests. Consequently, geothermal energy is regarded as a high-risk investment relative to other forms of energy production.
