The cost associated with the construction of a nuclear power plant is also of concern. Current estimates for the construction costs of the next generation 1,000 MWe nuclear power plant are in the neighborhood of $6 billion. If design and financing costs are included, the cost is estimated to be in the neighborhood of 10-12 dollars. While these estimates do not take into account the recent decline in economic activity and subsequent impact on the commodities market, it is still likely that the investment needed to build a large number of such plants will be very significant.
