species-rich ecosystems at greatest risk of destruction. Twenty-four of these hotspots containing half of the planet's species have been identified globally. Some of the most important hotspot countries will reach population densities that have been linked with very high rates of habitat loss. Five of the six most biologically rich countries (listed above) could see more than two-thirds of their original habitats destroyed by 2050 if this historical relationship holds (Brown et al. 1998: 19-20).
