The spatial and temporal variability of N2O emissions in livestock agriculture continues to challenge researchers tasked with the development of accurate measurement techniques and realistic models for estimating N2O emissions, and with evaluating the impact of mitigation strategies. Furthermore, emerging conflicts in meeting greenhouse gas reduction targets, as well as future trends in livestock agriculture and the impact of climate change on N2O emissions, will no doubt provide additional challenges for researchers and policy makers in our quest to meet the global N2O and greenhouse gas emission targets. Here we discuss some of these issues.
