Adenyltransferase (ATase) is the bifunctional effector, senzyme that controls the activity of glutamine synthetase (GS) by adenylation. GS in R. rubrurn can be ADP-ribosylated without losing the y-glutamyl transferase activity (Woehle et al. 1990). The deadenylation reaction of GS is not affected by the effectors PII-UMP, glutamine or a-ketoglutarate in R. rubrum, as it is in Escherichia coli, i.e. deadenylation is probably regulated differently in this diazotroph (Johansson et al. 1999).
