The A15 strain, identified first as Alcaligenes faeealis, was isolated from rice paddies in China. The strain can fix nitrogen under microaerobic conditions in the free-living state. It was found to colonize the root surface of rice and to invade the intercellular spaces of the root tissues. It can be considered as a facultative endophyte of rice and it appears as a particularly interesting strain to promote rice growth. Based on 16S rDNA analysis the strain was reassigned to Pseudomonas stutzeri.
