on the net exchange of CO2, N2O and CH4 from European forests and forest soils. The quantification is based on data for precipitation, temperature, atmospheric nitrogen deposition and soil chemistry (carbon/nitrogen and pH data) at: (i) ~500 intensive forest monitoring plots (De Vries et al., 2003b) (level II Monitoring Programme, with all measured data except for temperature, which is partly estimated); and (ii) ~6000 plots (Bleeker et al., 2004) at a systematic grid throughout the whole of Europe (level I Monitoring Programme, with interpolated precipitation and temperature data, modelled nitrogen deposition data and measured soil chemistry, i.e. carbon/nitrogen and pH data). The calculations presented below are all based on De Vries et al. (2006).
