The European Space Agency launched Envisat on 1 March of 2002. The SCIAMACHY instrument on board Envisat shows real-time CH4 concentration fields and profiles for the troposphere for the first time in history. The results can help provide a clearer picture in time and space of global CH4 emissions and concentrations, and thus improve the ' a priori' estimates of modellers. A reduction in uncertainties has since been achieved because local measurements at ground stations can now be verified with measurements from space.
