Main migration routes are through Morocco, Tunisia, and eastern Egypt, and lakes on these routes are important habitats for these birds. Sites such as Merja Zerga, Ichkeul, Burrulus, Manzala are important resting areas for migrating birds. These wetland areas are inundated with migrant waders and waterfowl during each migration season and are supplemented by notable resident species such as the Coot (Fulica atra), Crested Coot (Fulica cristata), African Marsh Owl (Asio capensis), and Double-spurred Francolin (Francolinus bicalcaratus).
