Morteratschgletscher is a valley glacier located in southeast Switzerland (46°24'N, 8°02'E). The glacier mainly faces north and is surrounded by high mountains. Its altitude ranges from 2000 to 4000m a.s.l. The glacier area is about 17km2 and Morteratschgletscher is currently 7km long. An automatic weather station (AWS) is located on a relatively flat part of the glacier snout at an altitude of 2100m a.s.l. It measures the four radiation components, air temperature, relative humidity, wind speed and wind direction, all at 3.5m above the glacier surface. Data from this AWS are useful for understanding the energy fluxes at the glacier surface, and also for developing and validating para-meterizations used in energy- and mass-balance models.
