The scientific tasks of the European research on the Weyburn oilfield are divided into three Work Packages (Riding et al., 2003). The scope and principal conclusions of each of these Work Packages are given in this section. This research was aimed principally at studying the potential long-term migration pathways of CO2, and the effects of CO2 on the hydrochemical and mineralogical properties of the reservoir rock at Weyburn. These are largely controlled by the regional geology, hydrodynamics and hydrochemistry of the aquifer systems.
