Surprises in the biosphere

Thus far it appears that the terrestrial biosphere has been absorbing a significant fraction of anthropogenic CO2, and thereby slowing down the rate of global climate change. Thus, from the point of view of the atmosphere at least, it can be viewed as a friend, a negative feedback that favours stability in the climate system. However, there are some concerns as to how fickle this friendship might be, and whether, if pushed too far, the biosphere might become a net source of CO2, thereby accelerating climate change and causing a positive feedback loop.

Nationalism in Greenland

It is quite easy to imagine a situation in which this could eventually lead to international controversy. Elsewhere in the world, most notably in a number of African states, Beijing has not only been able to establish a close commercial relationship with various governments but has also used these ties as a basis upon which to build a much broader political association. The Chinese armed forces, for example, have in recent years closely supported the governments of Congo, Sudan, Zimbabwe and Zambia as part of what President Hu has called 'strategic and mutual friendship' with Africa.36 So in the event that at some future point Greenland becomes independent from Denmark, it is plausible to argue that the Chinese could, in the same way, acquire a strong commercial and political relationship with its government that other countries, most obviously the United States, might regard as a possible threat.

Acknowledgements

Bruno Tremblay, for having found put me on the track of the one bug that bugged me most, for uncountable rides home, for his enthusiasm for science, his open mind, his joy and friendship. Alexey Kaplan, for his patience, Colin Stark, for his long-lasting scientific friendship, for being the only man who understoodMulhollandDrive apart from David Lynch, and for an evening crunching numbers in Mathematica while I was cooking.

Situated knowledge

My position is one of living outside the Arctic but with a keen interest in the region and with professional and friendship ties to people who have worked at the science-policy interface of Arctic international collaboration.31 In relation to the issue of global climate change, I have a long professional interest as a science journalist covering both scientific and political aspects as the discussions have developed since the early 1990s. I thus approach the question of Arctic climate change with many pre-understandings. This has created some advantages for the research, such as helping me gain access to meetings and people as well as knowing from first-hand experience some of the issues that came up in the Arctic Council. My previous involvement with Arctic Council work includes the role of science writer for two assessments of pollution issues in the Arc-tic.32 While I was doing my research on the ACIA, I was involved as scientific editor for an assessment on Arctic human...

Conclusions

This research would not have been possible without the field and laboratory assistance of M. Elver, D. Kliza, L. Moorman, C. Deacock, A. Lyttle, J. Williams, F. Walter and T. Irvine-Fynn. The Polar Continental Shelf Project provided logistical assistance for this project. The Northern Science Training Program and the Natural Sciences and Engineering Council of Canada provided financial assistance for field work. The Hamlet of Pond Inlet is acknowledged for their support. Critical review of the manuscript by T. Irvine-Fynn, R. Koerner and an anonymous referee is also very much appreciated and led to the improvement of the text. Finally, the advice, knowledge, friendship and field assistance of F. Michel is very greatly appreciated.

Study variables

Social control was represented by 5 survey questions that asked respondents about their likelihood of taking action if they saw children from their neighborhood destroying property, skipping school, fighting, or being disrespectful to an adult. Respondents were also asked about the likelihood that they would write a letter or attend a community meeting if they heard that budget cuts were likely to eliminate a program that was important to them, such as a local fire station. Responses to each question were on a 5 point Likert scale and had a total possible score of 4 (0 highly unlikely 4 highly likely) with higher values reflecting greater social control. Similar to social cohesion, a Cronbach's alpha statistic was calculated in SAS 9.1.3 (Cary, NC) to determine the consistency of responses to the 5 questions. Social capital was measured in two ways. Following Putnam's (2000) model of civic involvement, respondents were asked to report any memberships in business, civic, community, and...

Discussion

Evacuation, either through peer pressure or the anticipated need for assistance through volunteerism. Friendship and kinship ties were not associated with an increased risk of evacuation failure. Additional analyses of the density of relationships with friends and family using splines or other methods to account for outliers (e.g., some respondents who reported hundreds of local friends and relatives) should be explored in the future. A strength of this study is the generalizability of the results to the entire three-county area. The GIS-based survey site selection toolkit allowed for random selection of households in the second stage of sampling. This ensured that selected households were independent and represented the totality of the households in the cluster (Lemeshow and Robinson 1985). This modification also prevented the selection bias that may have been introduced by allowing interviewers to select households for subsequent interviews after beginning at a random starting point...

Bruce Ws

For a student with such interests, Edinburgh was an exciting place in the latter quarter of the 19th century. Through his friendship with Geddes he met the staff of the Challenger expedition, working alongside such luminaries as James Murray and John Young Buchanan. On his return to Scotland, he was employed at the meteorological observatory on the summit of Ben Nevis. It was while there, in June 1896, that Bruce received an invitation to make his first visit to the Arctic as a naturalist on the Jackson-Hamsworth expedition to Franz Josef Land. On the island, Bruce developed skills and continued to increase his knowledge and understanding of the polar environment in particular, his collections and observations on meteorology increased knowledge of the Arctic. It was on Franz Josef Land that he met Fridtjof Nansen, who had landed on the island following his failed, but heroic, attempt to reach the North Pole from the Fram. The two developed a friendship that lasted for the rest of...

Davis John

The English merchant seaman and explorer John Davis was given command of three expeditions to search for the elusive North West Passage partly as a result of his friendship with Adrian and Humphrey Gilbert and their half-brother Sir Walter Raleigh. He was also helped by the patronage of Dr. John Dee, and the sponsorship of William Sanderson and other London and West Country merchants. They secured permission from the Russia Company to seek out a new, northern route, and obtained the approval of Sir Francis Walsingham and the Privy Council. Davis sailed from Dartmouth on June 7, 1585 aboard the Sunneshine, accompanied by the Mooneshine commanded by William Bruton, with a complement of 42 men. Bruton and ships' officers Richard Pope and William Eston sailed again with Davis, as did John Janes, Sanderson's nephew and supercargo, who wrote accounts of Davis's first and third Arctic voyages.

Beginnings

They are far more vocal than any other of the great apes and much more peaceful than other chimps. They have never been seen to kill their own relatives and they possess the ability to read basic emotive stages on the faces of their kind, a feature shared by all higher primates. They pat each other on the hand to show affection or kiss or embrace each other they have menopause, develop lifelong friendships, and grieve for their dead babies by carrying them for days or weeks they have the ability to perform simple calculations and they communicate using signs. Bonobos are also the most sexual of all primates, a distinctive behavioral feature that Dutch ape researcher Frans de Waal sees as an important social function, not as a mere means of species reproduction.9
