It is a strong light demander (Taylor 1960) and common in secondary forest (Hall & Okali 1979). The abundance decreases significantly with rainfall (regression analysis). In the wet forests of Liberia it prefers therefore well-drained sites (Voorhoeve 1965). It is not selective of soils (Taylor 1960, Swaine 1996).
Germination is normal. Seedlings are usually very abundant near parent trees. Height classes up to about 30-40 cm are common under high shade, but exposure to the sun is required for further growth. Seedlings experience heavy mortality in the first year and are intolerate to dense climbers and shrubs. Nevertheless, the tree is common in secondary forest.
