The paradigm of abundant energy

Up to the first oil price shock cheap and abundant energy flows were widely considered as a prerequisite for economic development. The current energy structures in most industrialized countries, notably the United States, Canada and Eastern Europe, reflect this paradigm of abundant energy. International comparisons in addition reveal that energy intensities correlate highly negatively with energy prices.
