Sub Cooling of the Reflux Flow

Sub-cooling of the reflux flow far below the condensation temperature of the overhead product causes an increased energy demand. An explanation for sub-cooling of the reflux flow is a too high flow of cooling medium in the condenser, because the cooling medium is often not controlled. If there are no requirements for sub-cooling, the flow of cooling medium to the condenser should be controlled in a suitable manner. However, it is necessary to evaluate if a certain level of sub-cooling is necessary in a particular case, for instance to condense low-boiling components in the overhead vapors of the column.
