There is a tremendous amount of energy flow in the atmosphere. Before any of the Sun's energy can reach the Earth, it must first pass through the atmosphere. Once it enters the atmosphere, several things can happen to it. Some of the energy is directly absorbed by water vapor and ozone. Depending on existing cloud cover, some of it may be reflected directly back to outer space because clouds have a high albedo.
Energy is transferred throughout the atmosphere and to the Earth by three basic processes: radiation, conduction, and convection.
