For the simulation of earthquake rupture, information on absolute stress is crucial as an initial condition of the system. Absolute stress can be directly measured by in-situ experiments such as hydraulic fracturing experiments at the bottom of boreholes (Fig. 3) [Tsukahara et al. (1996, 2001); Ikeda et al. (2001)]. It can also be estimated by measuring the strain change of bore wall [Ishii et al. (2000)] and core samples taken from the borehole [Yamamoto and Yabe (2001)].
