This chapter will provide you with a very basic overview of the principles and technologies associated with water purification, or more specifically, sterilization. In very simplistic terms, there are two general classes of technologies, namely those based on chemical methods, and those based on non-chemical technologies. The major application is in purifying water for human consumption purposes. The subject is much broader and complex than presented in this chapter, but our intent is simply to gain a general working knowledge of the techniques that are available to us. Remember to refer to the Glossary at the end of the book if you run across any terms that are unfamiliar to you.
