5.2.6 Zone Settling
The third type of settling is zone settling. This is also called type 3 settling. Figure 5.11 shows a batch analysis of zone settling showing four zones A, B, C, and D. Zone A is cleared of solids; thus, it is called a clarification zone. B is called uniform settling zone, since the concentration of the solids in this zone is constant. In zone C, the solids concentration increases or thickens from the value at the interface B-C to the value at the interface C.D. Thus, this zone is called a thickening zone. (The thickening process is a process of concentrating the solids into a sludge.) Finally, in D, the solids are compressed and the matrix is compacted and consolidated.
