The recommended loading of 0.2 lb/ft2-wk (1000 g/m2-wk) is equivalent, for typical sludges, to a design area requirement of 4.5 ft2/capita (0.417 m2/capita).

This is about 2.5 times larger than a conventional sand drying bed. The construction cost difference will be even greater, as the vermistabilization bed must be covered and possibly heated; however, major cost savings are possible for the overall system, because thickening, digestion, and dewatering units may not be required if vermistabilization is used with liquid sludges.
