Algae removal from lagoon effluent is almost totally a function of the sand gradation used. When BOD5 and SS below 30 mg/L will satisfy requirements, a single-stage filter with medium sand (effective size of 0.3 mm) will produce a reasonable filter run. If better effluent quality is necessary, finer sand (effective size of 0.15 to 0.2 mm) is necessary or the use of a two-stage filtration system with the finer sand in the second stage.
