Impact ofcyclones on agriculture tte losses affecting cash crops in the cyclone prone regions, which constitute a major source of export earnings, is rather high. Horticultural crops, particularly plants with soft stems, suffer a direct loss of fruits and mechanical damage. In coastal areas, in addition to the battering effects of winds on existing crops, there is the additional damage caused by airborne sea salt which occurs within a few hundred metres of the coast. Winds which blow from seas spray a lot of salt on coastal areas, making it impossible to grow crops sensitive to excessive salt.
