The POLDER polarization retrieval is highly experimental. This retrieval usually under-predicts aerosol optical depths over ocean sites. This is quite in contrast to common overestimates with the POLDER-ocean retrieval. More interesting are POLDER retrievals over land. Based on the limited amount of data, the polarization retrieval tends to exceed AERONET aerosol optical depth at urban-industrial sites. Aerosol optical depths are much smaller than AERONET averages at dust-aerosol dominated sites. This is at least in part related to a reduced sensitivity of polarization for larger aerosol sizes.
