This paper describes the motivation and approach behind work to derive time series of maps of albedo of the Australian land surface from historical Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) data. The need for better albedo maps in Australian climate modelling is pointed out, and current Australian efforts to develop uniform best practice processing of AVHRR data are outlined. Then the approach adopted to develop a treatment of view angle effects in the AVHRR data is described, and some initial results of an investigation of the angular reflectance signatures of Australian land surfaces are presented.
