Enabling Technologies

As shown in some of the comments in the right column ofTable 5.2, a number of technologies, although not direct options for managing radiative forcing, will be essential for implementing some of the options we have identified. For example, if cost-effective carbon-free strategies for producing hydrogen fuel can be developed, then cost-effective strategies for compact hydrogen storage and conversion (e.g., fuel cells) become important. Similarly, energy storage technologies and/or highly efficient long-distance transmission of electric power (e.g., by superconducting cables) will be critical to making large-scale use of wind or photovoltaics a practical reality.
