Ivan Ivanovich Cherevichny was born on March 31, 1909 in the Kherson province of Ukraine. He was one of six children in a working-class family. He gained his pilot's qualification in 1933 at the United Military pilots and technicians school while serving in the Red Army, and then worked as an instructor in the Central Aviation School of Osoaviakhim (the Society for Assistance to Defense, Aviation and Chemical Development). His career as a polar pilot commenced in 1934 and lasted for 27 years. Cherevichny was married to Antonina Dmitrievna Cherevichnaya (Shibasheva) and had three children. He died on February 15, 1971 in Moscow and is buried in the Novodevichii cemetery.
