Isotopic Natural Abundance Techniques Plant Carbon in Soil

The 13C isotopic natural abundance C-budget approach can be used to determine the amount of NHC remaining in soil, SOC half-lives, and SOC turnover because relic SOC and new plant material additions have different isotopic values. When making these calculations, it is important to consider that above-ground and below-ground carbon inputs may have different isotopic signatures. For example, plant roots are often 13C-enriched compared to plant leaves (Badeck et al. 2005 Bowling et al. 2008). Furthermore, mycorrhizal fungi are frequently 13C-enriched compared to host plant leaves, probably because mycorrhizal fungi receive 13C-enriched carbon from host plant (Bostrom et al. 2008). respired CO2 from soil microorganisms being depleted in 13C (DeNiro and Epstein 1978 Agren et al. 1996 Santruckova et al. 2000 Ekblad et al. 2002 Bostrom et al. 2007 Bowling et al. 2008). Furthermore, mycorrhizal fungi were 13C-enriched compared with plant materials (Bostrom et al. 2008).

Heat islands

Urban heat islands (UHI, which can be defined in terms of the surface air temperature in an urban area relative to that in surrounding undeveloped areas) are commonly well developed in high latitudes during the polar night when anthropogenic heat supply is a major component of the energy balance. Most UHI studies have been carried out at middle and lower latitudes, but work has also been undertaken at Fairbanks, Alaska (Benson and Bowling, 1975 Bowling, 1986 Magee et al., 1999), and recently at Barrow, Alaska (Hinkel etal., 2003). Barrow (71 N) is on the Arctic coast and has a mostly indigenous Inupiat population numbering about 4600. Hourly air and soil temperature data were logged at 54 sites in a 150 km2 area during 2001-2. During December-March the average air temperature at the official Barrow station was 25.3 C and the 2001-2 winter was typical. Land surface models

Numerous LSMs of differing complexity and architecture are in existence. A major research avenue is model intercomparison. This has been conducted under the Project for Intercomparison of Land Surface Parameterization Schemes (PILPS), within the GEWEX Global Land Atmosphere System Study. PILPS 2e (Bowling et al., 2003) is a component of this effort aimed at evaluating the performance of uncoupled (stand alone) LSMs in northern high latitudes.
