while the weak absorption involves a spin-forbidden transition to a triplet state:

S02(X'A,) + M340 < A < 400 nm) -> S02(3B,).

S02 can dissociate to SO + O only at wavelengths below 218 nm:

S02(X'A,) + hv{A < 218 nm) -» SO(3S") + 0(3P).
