Some of the problems in satellite retrievals of cloud cover were discussed in Chapter 2. While recognizing these caveats, the APP data set analyzed by Wang and Key (2003) indicates that since 1982 the region north of 60° N has seen a general decrease in winter and autumn cloud cover, but an increase in spring and summer cloud cover. The changes for winter, spring and summer are allied with trends of the same sign in precipitable water (total column water vapor), but this is not true of autumn (Wang and Key, 2003). For the annual case, the trends in cloud cover largely cancel.
