Streten cloud vortex classification.

Type Description

W Wave development - localized thickening of a cloud band.

A Early vortex development - "comma cloud" merged with a major cloud band or in isolation.

B Late vortex development - a hook-shaped cloud with a marked slot of clear air.

C Vortex at full maturity - spiral of clear air around a well-defined centre.

D Dissipating vortex - either Dx with considerable cloud near centre, or Dy with fragmentary cloud near centre.

F/G Frontless vortices (or "cut-off lows) - corresponding respectively to Dx and

Dy types but not associated with a cloud band. (Not shown in Fig. 2.7)
