Concluding Remarks

From the preceding discussion, it can be seen that there has been a very substantial increase in our knowledge of the Antarctic Sector of the Pacific in many scientific disciplines, particularly since the IGY. Nonetheless, much of this remains in specialist journals and is not readily available. Further, the question of the possible exploitation of Antarctic resources has brought Antarctica and its surrounding oceans into increasing prominence over the last few years. It is also seen that the scientific base on which to assess possible environmental impacts as a result of man's activities is inadequate. The aim of this volume is to bring together some of the diverse information from this increasingly important region of the world's ocean in an attempt to show the scientific achievements as well as some of the problems that remain. It is hoped that collating this material will stimulate long-overdue scientific endeavours in this region.
