Improving responses to climate variability and change must be a crucial requirement for future agricultural sustainability. The challenge for the field of climate change impacts on agriculture is to integrate insights from the physical, biophysical, and social sciences into a comprehensive understanding of climate-agriculture interactions at seasonal-to-interannual and decadal-to-century timescales, as well as at regional and global spatial scales. The final challenge is to disseminate and apply this knowledge to "real-world" agricultural practices and planning worldwide, so that long-term sustainability may be truly enhanced.
